Research Dossier — 1968 Plymouth GTX

Context. Plymouth’s upscale muscle, the GTX, debuted on the redesigned 1968 B-body with sharp lines and a full-width tail panel. Standard motivation was the 440 “Super Commando,” with the fearsome 426 Hemi optional; transmissions included Torqueflite automatic or Hurst-equipped 4-speed.

Signature cues. Blacked-out GTX grille with bright surround, “belt” bumble-bee stripe, rectangular tail lamps within a ribbed panel, Coke-bottle flanks, rocker molding, and Magnum 500/Rallye wheel options. Convertibles wore a neat boot cover when the top was down.

Cabin. Buckets with console on many cars, simple slab dash with round gauges, optional rally cluster, woodgrain appliques and auxiliary instruments on performance builds.
